1. It is not a competition.
There is no “us vs. you” and we are not trying to steal your patients. We believe that interprofessional and multidisciplinary practice is the way of the future, much like you probably do.
2. Chiropractors help alleviate the burden off of the healthcare system.
The number of patient visits to a family doctor for back pain, neck pain and headaches are staggering. That means if these patients visited a chiropractor first, the savings in tax dollars will be substantial and wait times to see a doctor would be reduced (if you like numbers, check out this study from the US). Not only is chiropractic care more cost-effective, but patients report improved clinical outcomes AND get back to work faster. More working Canadians = a better economy. It’s a win-win!
3. It’s no secret that you don’t like MSK (musculoskeletal) pain patients.
They fill up your waiting rooms, keep coming back with the same problems, and often don’t get better. Chiropractors spend 4 years dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of MSK pain. We get our patients better and equip them with the tools to maintain their results (lifestyle changes, ergonomic advice, exercises). Save yourself the headache and send your MSK patients our way! Speaking of which, send us your headache/migraine patients too.
4. Chiropractic is a viable solution to the current opioid crisis.
You’ve heard by now that opioid prescriptions have been on the rise, and the consequences are catastrophic. But there are
other better options to manage chronic non-cancer pain. Did you know chiropractors are playing a major role in leading the conversation on solving the opioid crisis in Canada?
5. Mechanical problems need mechanical solutions.
If you had a toothache, you’d see your dentist first, wouldn’t you? Why should it be any different when it comes to your muscles and joints? There’s a time and a place for pharmacological interventions, but chiropractic care is a safe and effective first line of defense for MSK pain.
6. Chiropractors don’t adjust everyone unnecessarily/excessively.
We know when spinal manipulation is appropriate for a patient and when it is contraindicated. We do a very thorough history and physical to ensure that the source of the pain is mechanical and not something more sinister masquerading as MSK pain. This is what makes us doctors as opposed to therapists/technicians. Our diagnostic training goes beyond what is within our treating scope of practice so that we can recognize when a referral to the medical doctor is necessary.
7. We know you don’t understand what we do, and we’d love to talk to you about it.
There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and much of it is propagated by people who don’t understand chiropractic. Instead of accepting their word as fact, chat with someone who is in the profession. Questions such as: what is spinal manipulation? what does it do? why is it effective? are all good places to start. The best way to learn? Become a patient and see for yourself 😉
